MANUEL J. BORJA VILLEL & ANNA AGUSTI
Little English-language writing exists on the accomplished Spanish abstractionist Antoni Tapies. Roland Penrose´s readable and somewhat critical study, Tapies (Rizzoli, 1979), is out of print and Luis Permanyer´s Tapies and the New Culture ( LJ 2/1/87) is narrow in scope and barely comprehensible. A new survey would therefore have been welcome. Instead, we have the first volume of a projected six-volume catalogue raisonne. A mercifully brief foreword is followed by Agusti´s meticulous catalog of over 900 paintings, drawings, and sculptures, arranged by year. The 133 color plates look good; many of the over 800 black-and-white illustrations are murky. The sponsor, the Barcelona Tapies Foundation, expects to publish a volume per year. At this price, however, only the most comprehensive collections will contemplate ordering.
